///english version below: Territorio de Zaguates, on the mountain of stray dogs
Parisen vuotta sitten taisin somen kautta kuulla siitä ensimmäisen kerran; paikasta Costa Ricassa, jonne satoja ja satoja kulkukoiria on pelastettu juoksentelemaan vuorelle. Se on nimeltään Territorio de Zaguates, paikka, jota voisi kodittoman koiran paratiisiksikin kutsua. Päätimme lähteä paikan päälle ja näin sai alkunsa matka Keski-Amerikkaan.
Territorio de Zaguates on aidattu valtava entinen maitofarmi, jonka toinen paikan perustajista peri vanhemmiltaan. Tällä hetkellä koiria on n. 900. Joka päivä työntekijät vievät halukkaat koirat vuorille juoksemaan. Vapaina. Toinen osa on valistustyö.
Joitakin koiria on häkeissä odottamassa mm.sterilointioperaatiota. Kaikki ovat siis kodittomia kadulla eläneitä koiria. Koirille on suojia ja ruokinta-alue.
Lähdemme kävelemään vuorille. Koirat saavat tulla mukaan tai olla tulematta. Osa jää suojille, suurin osa lähtee mukaan. Avustajat lähtevät juoksemaan ja valtava koiralauma singahtaa perään. Pölypilvessä etenevä lauma on melkoisen vaikuttava näky.
Alvaro, toinen perustajista, on aivan selkeästi lauman pomo.
Koirilla on rankkoja taustoja ja jokunen on hyvinkin kurjassa kunnossa (laihoja, iho-ongelmaisia, silmävammaisia jne), silti valtaosa on yllättävän hyvässä kunnossa taustaansa nähden.
Kaikki Territorioon tulevat koirat siis steriloidaan / kastroidaan, jotta katukoiraongelma pienenisi. Territorion pyörittäminen imee n.10 000 dollaria kuussa. 60% ruuasta tulee sponsorilta, loput hankitaan lahjoituksilla. Neutralisoinnit hyväsydäminen lääkäri tekee hyvään hintaan n. 20e/ koira, joka ei ole maan hinnoilla juuri mitään (Toim.huom.CR on kallis maa, melkein Suomen hintatasoa). Lisäksi lääkkeet: koirilla on paljon kuumuuden ja kuivuuden aiheuttamia iho-ongelmia, joita pitää hoitaa. Madotukset, rokotukset ym. Huh.
Tuolla rahalla saa steriloitua yli 20 koiraa. Kiitos te ihanat ihmiset, joilla sydän on paikallaan.
Miksi näiden hyväsydämisten ihmisten ei anneta auttaa rauhassa, vaan he joutuvat kaiken lisäksi kokemaan ilkivaltaa tilallaan?
Territorio de Zaguates, on the mountain of stray dogs
I think it was a couple of years ago, when I first time heard about it through social media, the place in Costa Rica, where hundreds and hundreds of stray dogs had been saved to run free on the mountain. The place is called Territorio de Zaguates and you could call it a stray dogs paradise. We wanted to go and check it out!
Territorio de Zaguates is a former dairy farm, that one of the two founders inherited from her parents. At the moment there are app. 900+ dogs. Every day the workers take the dogs up to the mountain to run free, as one huge herd.
A couple of times per month, they let people go and join them on the mountain walk. That way the dogs get socialized so that it is easier to get them adopted. Adoptions is one thing that TDZ does, another one is education. They try to educate people to appreciate mixed-race-dogs as much as breeded ones.
We joined one of these walks, feeling both nervous and excited. It is hard to describe it, but I will try:
We jump out of the car and there it is: heat, dust, bunch of other visitors and 800-900 dogs. Free all over the place. Some dogs are in cages, waiting to be spayed. All of these mutts are former stray dogs. There are shelters and feeding areas for the dogs.
We take off to the mountains. The dogs may or may not follow, the choice is theirs. Some stay at the shade of shelters, most of them join the group. Volunteers take off running and the dogs rush after them. The herd that runs in the huge dust cloud, is quite a sight.
The weirdest thing is that 99% of the time the dogs are in peace with each other. Little growling here and there, and one fight that had to be separated, but mainly they were all in friendly terms with each other. Alvaro, one of the founders is clearly the leader of the pack. When things get a bit too wild, Alvaro tells them to stop, strictly but gently. When Alvaro sits down, the dogs wanna climb on his lap. You can see that the dogs trust him and that they are treated well.
The past of these dogs is tough and some of them also look pretty rough (skinny, they have skin problems, eye injuries etc), but the majority of them seem suprsingly sound. What surprises me the most, is the fact, that these dogs are quite lively, perky and in quite good physical condition. You often see stray dogs that are numb and given up. These are not, they clearly have gotten their second chance and they seem to take the most out of it! They wanna run and play, eventhou it is very hot. Luckily they get to drink from the creeks on the mountain during the walk. Most of the dogs are not scared of human touch, some of them seek for it. Only a few seem to go out of the way of us strangers.
All the dogs that get to come to TDZ, are spayed to decrease the stray dog problem. Running of the place costs app. 10 000 USD per month. 60% of the dog food comes from sponsors, the rest is covered by donations. A good hearted vet sterilizes the dogs for 20 USD / each, which is very cheap (CR is a country as expensive as Finland). Plus all the medications: dogs have lots of heat related skin problems and they also need anti parasite treatments, vaccinations etc…The load of work that the volunteers do, is huge. Think about how much poop 900 dogs create. Oh my… One of the founders works full time to provide for their family, the other one takes care of the dogs, with the help of volunteers, full time, every day. How amazing is that. Before we left from home, we asked for a little help from our friends and they gave it worth 420 dollars. That money gets at least 20 dogs spayed. Thanks to these good hearted people!
TDZ tries to find these dogs homes, but those that can never find one, will be looked after at the shelter. From our walk, three dogs were adopted. So few, but it is better than no dogs.
After the day at the Territorio de Zaguates, I feel so much:
I feel gratitude and great admiration for these amazing people who give their all to these poor dogs.
I feel anger and grief: What makes people treat these dogs badly in the first place? Why are these mixed-race dogs not adopted more? Why do these good hearted people have to tolerate vandalism at the shelter after all the good things they do?
They do all they possibly can in the TDZ, and eventhou those dogs have great place to run free, nothing beats own home, exclusive love and attention, and well looked after health issues.
I feel some kind of releaf that these dogs have at least this place, this herd and these good people, which is so much more than living on the streets and landfills. They are safe, fed, watered, medicated, sheltered and looked after.
For me the only option has always been a rescue dog. Unfortunately the process to get one from CR to Finland would have been way too long and hard for the dog.
My heart breaks when I think back to some of these dogs at Territorio de Zaguates, the ones, that leaned on me long and hard. It felt like these creatures were the most thirsty for love I have ever encountered. Luckily there was lots of love in the air that day!
